The development of information and communication technologies, deprofessionalization of journalistic activity, and the changes in media consumption are transforming professional journalistic standards and practices worldwide. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has recently changed both media practices and professional journalism education in different regions of the world. Academic, expert, policy-making and professional journalistic communities have been discussing issues of adapting educational standards and practices to the new demands of the professional environment, finding a balance between theoretical education and practical skills, integrating modern information technologies into educational activities, and developing digital and media literacy of future journalists.

There is a growing need for professional journalism education to develop new digital competencies and skills of journalists, along with the ability to understand the global information space and media industry in different regions of the world. Current research indicates that the problem of digital literacy, a critical attitude to information in the online environment and information security are typical for various national and cultural contexts, and can be intensified due to the spread of false information, disinformation, and fake news in the online environment. In this vein, it is essential to increase the level of digital capital among future journalists, contributing to critical thinking, conscious attitude to information received from various sources, the ability to verify information, and to protect personal data during online engagement.

The conference welcomes discussion about the current state of journalism education in Russia and China, best practices from the education field, current technological, socio-cultural and economic challenges, as well as possible ways of cooperation in the field of journalism education between the countries.

The conference will be organized by the Union of Journalism Education of Chinese and Russian Universities in collaboration with the Faculty of Journalism, Lomonosov Moscow State University, and National Association of Mass Media Researchers. The Union was founded in 2016 within bilateral year of Chinese and Russian mass media collaboration. Today, it unites 15 Russian universities and 21 Chinese universities.
